Last House at Summerlands
This song remembers the Summerlands Housing Estate overlooking the famous penguin parade at Phillip Island that was demolished in the 1990s to become a nature reserve to protect the fairy penguins. I was lucky enough to stay in one of the last houses with the penguins living under the floor and all around the garden. They’re an amazing animal; so small and charming and yet so tough. Seeing them climb cliffs in the dark with their tiny legs and a belly full of fish after a long day at sea is inspirational. Still it was sad when the houses went – all those memories locked up in them. It’s great that nature was restored but something else got lost in the process.
